Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- With an ultra-aerodynamic 99 mm rim profile and a solid rear wheel, this Dura-Ace set is designed to minimise air resistance in time trials and triathlons.
- The wheels are fitted with Super Aero carbon spokes (5.2 mm x 0.8 mm) for optimal stiffness, weight and wind tunnel performance.
- The updated cup & cone bearings reduce friction under load by 30% and are easy to adjust and service.
- The wheels are optimised for wide 28 mm and 30 mm tyres; the wide internal and external rim profiles ensure a seamless transition between the tyre and the rim.
- The Direct Engagement freehub on the rear wheel ensures instant and stiff power transfer with every pedal stroke.
- With a 99 mm rim height, the front wheel is sensitive to strong crosswinds; as a whole, the wheelset requires good handling skills and experience in stormy weather.
- The freehub is only compatible with Shimano 12-speed road bike cassettes; it is not compatible with 11-speed cassettes or SRAM/Campagnolo groupsets.

In collaboration with WorldTour time trialists and professional triathletes, Shimano has optimised the C99 rim shape for modern 28 mm and 30 mm road tyres. The extra-wide outer rim width ensures that the airflow glides smoothly and without turbulence over the tyre and rim. Add the wide Super Aero carbon spokes (16 spokes in the front wheel) and this delivers a significant reduction in power consumption at speeds above 45 km/h.
The rim has a hooked design to give you the freedom to go for a tubeless setup with latex sealant for lowest rolling resistance, or a traditional setup with inner tubes.
• Direct Engagement hub: The rear wheel is fitted with Shimano’s patented Direct Engagement ratchet system. Two interlocking sprockets ensure direct and loss-free power transfer during acceleration.
• Updated cup & cone bearings: Shimano has deliberately opted for adjustable cup & cone bearings because they better absorb lateral forces and angular loads when cornering than standard industrial bearings. The system now features replaceable cups and offers up to 30% less frictional resistance under load.
Compatible with:
• Road bikes with disc brakes and 12 mm thru-axles (100x12 mm front, 142x12 mm rear).
• Shimano 12-speed road bike cassettes (such as Dura-Ace R9200, Ultegra R8100 and 105 R7100).
• Disc brake rotors with the Center Lock mounting system.
• Tubeless tyres as well as standard folding and clincher tyres with inner tubes. The ideal tyre width is 28 mm to 30 mm, but tyres ranging from 25 mm to 35 mm also fit perfectly.
Not compatible with:
• Shimano 11-speed (or 10-speed) cassettes.
• SRAM XDR or Campagnolo cassettes (Shimano does not produce separate sprocket bodies for other brands for these wheels).
• Bikes with rim brakes or quick-release axles.
• Disc brake rotors with a 6-bolt installation system (unless you use an adapter).
Not sure? Here’s how to check:
Take a close look at the cassette currently fitted to your bike: Count the number of sprockets at the rear to make sure you’re riding a 12-speed and check that it says "Shimano" on it. Also measure the width of your current axles (the standard is 100 mm at the front and 142 mm at the rear).
• Shimano Dura-Ace WH-R9370-C99-TL front wheel and/or Shimano Dura-Ace WH-R9370-C99-TL rear wheel (with Shimano 12-speed HG-L2 freehub body)
• Pre-fitted tubeless rim tape
• Tubeless valves with extenders (2 pieces)
Not included / still required:
• Center Lock disc brake rotors
• Shimano 12-speed cassette
• Road bike tyres
• Inner tubes (with extra-long valves or valve extenders) or tubeless sealant
• 12 mm thru-axles (these are part of your bike frame)
• Check the bearings: You can adjust the cup & cone hubs yourself. Notice any play? Adjust the cone yourself or have it done by a professional bike mechanic.
• Choose the correct tyre pressure: As the internal rim width is 23 mm, tyres will sit slightly wider than on older rims. Therefore, you can (and should) ride with slightly lower tyre pressure than you may be used to. This noticeably improves grip and comfort without compromising on speed.
• Store your carbon wheels in a wheel bag when transporting them in a car to keep the rims and spokes in good condition.
Is the Shimano Dura-Ace R9370 C99 wheelset compatible with road bikes and time-trial set-ups?
Yes, the C99 wheelset is designed for time trial and triathlon bikes, as well as aerodynamic road bikes with disc brakes and 12 mm thru-axles. Before ordering the wheel(s), check that your frame has sufficient clearance for the wide aero rims.
Can I use an 11-speed cassette on the Shimano Dura-Ace C99 wheels?
No, this wheelset is only compatible with Shimano 12-speed road bike cassettes. The Direct Engagement freehub does not accept 11-speed or older Shimano cassettes.
Are the Shimano Dura-Ace C99 wheels tubeless-ready?
Yes, the C99 wheels come with pre-fitted tubeless rim tape and tubeless valves. However, thanks to the hooked rims, you can also choose to ride with standard inner tubes.
What is the difference between the Super Aero and the Aero spoke profiles?
Shimano uses two types of carbon spokes for the R9370 series: Aero (4.0 mm x 1.1 mm) and Super Aero (5.2 mm x 0.8 mm). The C99 series uses the wider and thinner Super Aero spokes to minimise drag at high speeds.
Can I combine the C99 front wheel with a solid rear wheel?
Yes, for time trials and triathlons, the combination of the C99 front wheel and the C99 rear disc wheel is the most aerodynamic setup offered by Shimano.
